Four Bedrooms · Sleeps Eight · Dandenong Ranges, VIC

SkyRidge Vista is a private, four-bedroom retreat in the Dandenong Ranges, an hour from Melbourne — sleeping up to eight, with the city skyline in view and a forest of your own to wander.

Time Moves Differently Here.

There's a moment, not long after arriving, when something in you quietens. Perhaps it's the light — filtering down through the canopy, shifting as the leaves move. Perhaps it's the sound of a lyrebird calling, unseen, somewhere in the ferns below.

Whatever it is, the noise of the week starts to fall away, and you find yourself simply present — watching the light change, listening rather than thinking, in no hurry to be anywhere else. SkyRidge Vista doesn't ask you to relax. It just makes it very hard not to

Every room here was set to catch the light differently, so no sunrise or sunset ever looks quite the same. Sink into a chair, let the week fall away, and see which evening becomes yours.

The kitchen we kept

SkyRidge Vista was not built yesterday, and that is rather the point.

The house has been restored rather than replaced. Where things were made well, we left them alone — the original 1950s kitchen with its red cabinetry and teal splashback, the brickwork around the fireplace, the sandstone that edges the ponds in the garden. Guests arrive expecting a view and find themselves standing in the kitchen instead, running a hand along a benchtop that has been there for seventy years.

Everything that needed doing has been done. The linen is new, the bathrooms are new, the heating is new, the tech works properly. But the character was never something to be updated out. There is a particular kind of quiet that only comes from a house with some years behind it, and no amount of new building can manufacture it.

One guest described it as beautifully thought out and restored. We were pleased with that.

Resident Wildlife

SkyRidge Vista shares its garden with a handful of native locals. Wander quietly through the forest out back, and you may just cross paths with one.

Superb Lyrebird

Listen for a rustle in the undergrowth — it's often a lyrebird, and they're regular visitors to our backyard. Move slowly and quietly, and they'll usually stay put rather than dart away. One of the world's most extraordinary mimics, weaving the calls of other birds into its own extraordinary song.

A brown owl perched on tree branches with green leaves and needles, partially hidden by foliage.

Southern Boobook

Most nights, a Boobook calls somewhere close to the house — a soft, rhythmic hoot drifting through the dark. By day, if you're lucky, you might find one perched motionless high in the canopy, quietly observing you back. Australia's smallest and most common owl, rarely seen, often heard.

Two birds perched on a leafless tree branch against a pale sky, with one bird facing forward and the other tilting its head.

Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo

Listen for their mournful, far-carrying call, then look up — you'll often catch a pair gliding gracefully between the treetops, their yellow tail feathers flashing as they pass. Slow, unhurried flyers, they always seem to know there's nowhere else to be.
